Avago Adds Pair of Miniature Dual-band Power Amplifier Modules

September 9, 2009

Avago Technologies, a supplier of analog interface components for communications, industrial and consumer applications, announced a pair of dual-band power amplifier modules (PAM) for handset applications that operate in UMTS Bands 1+8 and 2+5. Housed in a 4 mm by 5mm form factor, 14-pin surface-mount package, the ACPM-7355/7357 incorporates Avago’s fifth generation CoolPAM™5 technology to enable low power consumption and extended talk time in mobile handset applications. Moreover, these new PA modules meet stringent UMTS linearity requirements.

Handsets that are currently available today tend to have more limits on the layout because more features have been added. As a result, more components are now being mounted on the printed circuit boards of mobile handsets. Moreover, handset engineers prefer to use a PA that has a smaller footprint. Dual-band PAs address this growing trend by combining two bands into one module.

Avago’s ACPM-7355/7357 modules are self-contained and incorporate 50 ohm input and output matching networks and support three modes (bypass, mid- and high-power modes). CoolPAM technology is a stage bypass technology that features low quiescent current, and enables the power amplifier to lower power consumption and extend talk time of mobile handset devices. Moreover, the active bypass feature has been added to enhance power added efficiency at low output ranges.

The ACPM-7355/7357 PAM is manufactured on an advanced InGaP hetero-junction bipolar transistor (HBT), microwave monolithic integrated circuit (MMIC) technology to offer state-of-the-art reliability, temperature stability and ruggedness.
