This book provides, in a single volume, comprehensive coverage of microwave and wireless circuits and components design. The extensive use of wireless communications has generated a strong demand for RF circuits that are small, inexpensive and with low power consumption. As a result, radio frequency integrated circuits (RFIC) have become an exciting area for research and product development. Components are designed with the main concerns being frequency response, gain, stability, noise, distortion (nonlinearity), impedance matching and power dissipation. The focus of the book is how to design and build the major circuit blocks that make up the RF portion of a radio using IC technology. Chapter 1 offers an introduction to communication circuits with some considerations on active devices and a comparison between low frequency analog and microwave designs in RFIC design.

Chapter 2 describes issues in RFIC design, noise, linearity and filtering with block level performance specifications. A brief review of technology, including transistor performance, is given in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 discusses various methods of matching impedances. Chapter 5 is dedicated to the realizations and limitations of passive circuit components in IC technology with emphasis on inductors and transformers. LNA design is the subject of Chapter 6, which describes the different approaches to low noise amplification, noise and nonlinearity for different circuit configurations. In Chapter 7, different mixer configurations are offered with discussions of their particular properties, such as noise, linearity and isolation. Chapter 8 considers voltage-controlled oscillators, including different methods of generating a negative resistance, basic differential oscillator topologies, tunability and amplitude control circuits. High frequency filter circuits are the subject of Chapter 9. They include second-order and integrated RF filters as well as ways to achieve filters with higher Q. Power amplifiers are described in Chapter 10. Power capability, efficiency and matching configurations are discussed. The different classes of amplification are analyzed.
