SKYLINE DAY As the nation's sixth largest city, Phoenix offers scenic diversity and unbeatable weather. Located in the heart of the Sonoran desert, Phoenix is known as the "Valley of the Sun" because it is nestled among dramatic mountain ranges from the north, south, east and west. With year-round sunshine and mild temperatures, Phoenix is a premier vacation destination averaging 300 sunny days a year and a temperature of 72°.

The Phoenix Civic Plaza Convention Center, home of this year's 2001 IEEE MTT-S Symposium, is in the heart of downtown Phoenix. From the convention center, you can walk to a variety of restaurants, shops, museums and theaters, including the Bank One Ballpark, America West Arena, Arizona Science Center, Orpheum Theater, Phoenix Museum of History, the Heard Museum, the Phoenix Art Museum and the Arizona Center.

The Phoenix area offers plenty for the sports fan, boasting professional teams in the four major sports -- Major League Baseball (Arizona Diamondbacks), NBA basketball (Phoenix Suns), NFL football  (Arizona Cardinals) and NHL hockey (Phoenix Coyotes). While in town, be sure and catch a baseball game at Bank One Ballpark (BOB). You will not want to miss the opportunity to see the Arizona Diamondbacks play in this retractable-roof stadium. The Diamondbacks will be hosting the San Francisco Giants May 21 to 23 at the BOB. Let's not forget golf! With so many sunshine-filled days, Phoenix is the perfect place to enjoy a round of golf. The greater Phoenix area features some of the finest golfing in the nation and is home to more than 190 golf courses.

Just a short drive from downtown Phoenix is two of its surrounding cities, Scottsdale and Tempe. As "the West's most western town," Scottsdale remains Arizona's premier resort destination with world-class hotels, restaurants, galleries, boutiques and shops, including Scottsdale Fashion Square and the famous Fifth Avenue shopping area in Old Town Scottsdale. Tempe is home to Arizona State University (Sun Devils), Tempe Town Lake and the Arizona Mills Factory Outlet Mall. The city evolves around Mill Avenue, a historic street that is now a main thoroughfare lined with shops and restaurants.

For those seeking outdoor activities, the Papago Park recreation area located between Phoenix, Scottsdale and Tempe offers plenty of hiking trails, the famous peek-through rock landmark Hole-in-the-Rock, the Phoenix Zoo and Desert Botanical Garden.

Whether your interests are in professional sports, golf, scenic hiking trails or simply dining and shopping, Phoenix has it all! If you are thinking of extending your visit to include some vacation time, northern Arizona is a must see -- from the Grand Canyon, one of the seven natural wonders of the world, to Sedona, a majestic arts community settled among the beautiful red rocks of Arizona.

We are very excited to be hosting this year's show in "The Grand Canyon State." A sampling of the many great restaurants, shopping and entertainment destinations for your visit have been provided on the following pages. We look forward to seeing you in May. Remember, it's a dry heat!

Surrounding Areas and Neighborhoods

Mesa

As the third largest city in Arizona, Mesa has exploded in size since its beginnings as a Mormon settlement founded in 1878. Mesa is home to many Fortune 500 manufacturers -- including those in the electronics, automotive testing and aerospace industries. Mesa's economic strength also lies in its shopping centers. Two regional malls bring in sales from across the valley. Culturally, Mesa is home to six museums, three libraries and 11 theaters. The Arizona Museum for Youth teaches children through many hands-on exhibits, and Mesa Southwest Museum provides lessons in the history and culture of the region.

Paradise Valley

Nestled between Phoenix and Scottsdale with Camelback Mountain rising above the town, Paradise Valley is sprinkled with upscale resorts, beautiful desert plants and very few businesses. The town enjoys wonderful desert landscapes as well as magnificent views of Camelback Mountain and Mummy Mountain. Echo Canyon Recreational Area offers many scenic and challenging hikes, while the Paradise Valley Scenic Drive is ideal for the less adventurous visitor.

Phoenix

The sixth largest city in the country, Phoenix is the capital of Arizona and the Maricopa County Seat. Downtown Phoenix centers between Seventh Street and 19th Avenue on five streets named for US presidents -- Van Buren, Monroe, Adams, Washington and Jefferson. Here one will find the State Capitol, Heritage Square, Arizona Science Center, Orpheum Theater, the Civic Center, Phoenix Museum of History, the Heard Museum, the Phoenix Art Museum and the Arizona Center as well as America West Arena and Bank One Ballpark. These venues have brought an explosion of interest in opening businesses, particularly restaurants, coffeehouses and nightclubs that can take advantage of the nighttime foot traffic in the area.

Scottsdale

First occupied from 800 to 1400 AD by the Hohokam Indians, this city has matured from "the West's most Western town" to a world-class city. Scottsdale is the state's largest resort destination and its quality lifestyle includes well-planned living, working and shopping areas. The city is also home to many top hotels, restaurants, shops and boutiques, as well as Scottsdale Fashion Square and the famous Fifth Avenue. Scottsdale is also recognized for its architectural and landscape design excellence, and its emphasis on the preservation of its mountain and desert areas.

Tempe

The state's fifth-largest city, Tempe is in the center of the East Valley and is home to America West Airlines, the Fiesta Bowl and Arizona State University, which boasts the largest enrollment of any university in the Southwestern states. The city blends the dynamics of a high tech business center, the fun and excitement of a resort, the warmth and comfort of a residential neighborhood with the small town atmosphere of a college community. Old Town Tempe is the city's principal business district, with many of its shops, boutiques and restaurants housed in restored structures built around the turn of the century. Mill Avenue in downtown Tempe also offers a variety of shops, boutiques, restaurants and bars.
