Custom MMIC awarded U.S. Navy Phase II SBIR contract

February 4, 2015

Custom MMIC, a developer of performance-driven monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMICs), is pleased to announce the awarding of a Phase II Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) contract from the United States Navy, entitled “Gallium Nitride Based Active Electronically Scanned Arrays (AESA) Technology for High Altitude Periscope Detection.”

Within the scope of this Phase II contract, Custom MMIC will design, manufacture, and test a series of high performance, packaged GaN power amplifiers (PAs) and low noise amplifiers (LNAs) covering the 5 to 6 GHz bandwidth. These amplifiers will utilize Custom MMIC’s innovative design techniques to drastically reduce size, and therefore cost, by more than 50 percent as compared to currently available MMIC solutions. The PAs will deliver greater than 20 W of saturated output power, whereas the LNA will have a noise figure of less than 1 dB across the operating band.

"We are excited to be working with the U.S. Navy on the development of these high performance components," said Paul Blount, President and CEO of Custom MMIC. “The MMICs we will create as part of this program will bring cost effective GaN solutions to the problem of periscope detection.”
