Kenya relies on frequency management solutions from Rohde & Schwarz

August 18, 2014

The Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK) has commissioned Rohde & Schwarz to implement a spectrum management and monitoring system (SMMS). The solution, which consists of mobile and stationary components, will help the CAK regulate the radio spectrum to ensure interference-free reception of services such as radio, TV and wireless communications.

The CAK has awarded Rohde & Schwarz a contract to upgrade and expand the country's spectrum management infrastructure. The company will also provide training and maintenance services. The nationwide system will be delivered and implemented by the beginning of 2016. The system is centrally controlled from Nairobi; an additional regional operation centre is located in Mombasa.

Through effective frequency management, the CAK can detect and prevent interference in radiocommunications services. This is achieved by monitoring the electromagnetic spectrum and locating the position of suspect signals. The R&S UMS300, from the R&S UMS family of universal monitoring systems, accomplishes these tasks quickly and reliably. It is the core of the new Rohde & Schwarz installation in Kenya.

The R&S UMS300 system is enclosed in a compact weatherproof housing and can be mounted directly on top of the antenna mast. The resulting high system sensitivity makes it possible to precisely locate even weak signals and expands the detection range. Installation on masts or roofs also reduces infrastructure requirements. Mounting the hardware at a certain height makes it harder to reach, reducing the risk of damage and theft.
