Rockwell Collins avionics to be featured on 80 China Eastern Airlines aircraft

February 13, 2014

Rockwell Collins announced that China Eastern Airlines has selected a comprehensive suite of its communication, navigation and surveillance avionics and SATCOM for 80 new aircraft, including 60 Airbus A320s and 20 Boeing 777s.

Rockwell Collins’ new MultiScan ThreatTrack™ weather radar, which provides unprecedented capabilities for assessing lightning, hail and turbulence, will be featured on all of the aircraft.

“ThreatTrack alerts pilots to a wider range of atmospheric threats for safer and smoother flights,” said Colin Mahoney, senior vice president, International and Services Solutions for Rockwell Collins. “We’re honored by China Eastern’s radar and avionics selection which is backed by our dedicated customer support team throughout the world.”

MultiScan ThreatTrack goes beyond hail and lightning prediction within a thunderstorm cell and alerts pilots to these significant threats adjacent to the cell. If these thunderstorms are growing ahead of and below the aircraft, ThreatTrack’s Predictive Overflight™ protection warns the flight crew if the cells will be in the aircraft’s flight path.

In addition, MultiScan ThreatTrack is the first in the industry to feature two levels of turbulence detection—severe and ride-quality—which more accurately informs flight crews of the type of turbulence in their path.

Also included in China Eastern’s selection are Rockwell Collins’ GLU-925 Multi-Mode Receiver (MMR)—the first ever certified GPS Landing System receiver, automatic detection finder (ADF), distance measuring equipment (DME), VOR short-range radio navigation system and HF/VHF radios.

For SATCOM, China Eastern selected Rockwell Collins’ SAT-2200, which enables airborne connectivity for both passengers and flight deck communications. The system complies with the latest ARINC 781 industry standard for Inmarsat SATCOM capability for classic Aeronautical, Swift64 and SwiftBroadband operation.
