Fifth Annual Wireless Symposium Show Guide

Following is a listing of the workshops and papers composing the technical program of the 1997 Wireless Symposium & Exhibition, sponsored by Microwaves & RF and Wireless Systems Design magazines, to be held in Santa Clara, CA February 10Ð14, 1997.

MONDAY, February 10, 1997
9:00 am to 12:00 pm

Workshop 3: Spread Spectrum
The basic theories behind frequency hopping and direct-sequence, spread spectrum systems are covered, along with methods to implement spread spectrum techniques for maximum information-carrying performance. The important aspects of the code-division multiple access (CDMA) methods used in digital cellular and personal communications services (PCS) systems are also highlighted.

Workshop 1:
Wireless Design Made Simple, Part I
This tutorial-level course is ideal for technical managers and marketing professionals who need to know about RF and wireless technologies but donÕt want to suffer through lengthy and complex mathematical explanations. Part I covers RF principles, systems and devices (such as amplifiers, oscillators, filters, mixers and communications systems).

Workshop 2:
Oscillator Design for Wireless Applications
Accurate, stable oscillators are critical to the success of sophisticated analog and digital wireless communications systems and advanced digitally modulated systems. This full-day course covers a wide range of signal-source design options, including information on crystal oscillators, voltage-controlled oscillators (VCO) and resonator-based oscillators. The design of each type of oscillator is detailed and methods to best match each source type for a given application are described. Approaches to applying computer-aided engineering (CAE) design tools to analyze, simulate and optimize different oscillator designs are discussed.

Workshop 4:
Wireless Datacom Regulatory Scene
Regulations and standards can both hinder and speed the acceptance of wireless equipment and services throughout the world. For example, in the case of wireless local-area networks (WLAN), several companies have developed different protocols and operating systems that do not promote compatibility. Adoption of a standard such as the IEEEÕs 802.11 documentation should accelerate the acceptance of WLAN systems throughout the world and speed their market growth. The different standards and regulations impacting various wireless data systems are discussed, along with how it is possible to use standards as a design guide for future products.

Workshop 1:
Wireless Design Made Simple, Part II
The second day of this two-day workshop highlights wireless systems at a block diagram level. Insights are provided into different modulation techniques, system functions (including error correction, voice coding and multiple-access methods such as CDMA and TDMA) and wireless markets.

Workshop 5:
Wireless RF Circuit Design, Part I
Commercially available discrete devices and monolithic integrated circuits for low noise and low distortion amplification are reviewed, progressing into RF and microwave small-signal linear amplifier design techniques. Broadband RF stability and circuit stabilization technques are examined, and impedance matching, gain and noise performance, and their trade-offs are evaluated using both lumped and distributed circuit components.

Workshop 6:
Measuring the Wireless Transmission Spectrum
Comprehensive insights into different types of wireless signals such as digitally modulated signals, electromagnetic interference (EMI), radio frequency interference (RFI), pulsed signals, high power signals, broadcast signals and television signals are provided, and effective ways to measure these signals with spread spectrum analyzers are described. The many different measurements that are possible on these signals (such as signal parity and occupied bandwidth) and within a given bandwidth (such as adjacent channel) are explained.

Workshop 7:
Wireless RF Circuit Design, Part II
This course on low noise amplifiers (LNA) focuses on single-stage and multistage LNAs using the available-gain design approach. Gain, noise, linearity, stability and impedance-matching techniques for bipolar and FET amplifiers are considered. Lossless feedback techniques are also examined to improve the input match of the LNA. Interactive computer-aided engineering (CAE) and computer-aided design (CAD) techniques will be used by means of video projection. Illustrative examples are used, contrasting the trade-offs in price, performance, availability and flexibility for a wide range of state-of-the-art low voltage active devices.

Workshop 8:
Wireless Receiver Design
This one-day course discusses the driving forces and regulations behind different wireless systems, examines frequency allocations and how they affect design strategies, and explores different system methodologies such as spread spectrum methods (DSSS and FHSS) and multiple-access techniques (TDMA, FDMA and CDMA). Sampling theory and phase- and frequency-modulation techniques, including detailed circuit examples, are reviewed. Several examples of actual wireless systems are presented.
