SMBV100A vector signal generator

General-purpose vector signal generator from Rohde & Schwarz raises the bar for value and performance

Munich, September 26, 2008 — The new, attractively priced R&S SMBV100A vector signal generator from Rohde & Schwarz offers performance that until now has been available only in considerably more expensive instruments. It provides an output level of typ. +24 dBm up to 6 GHz and a maximum RF bandwidth of 528 MHz. Digital standards such as WiMAX, 3GPP FDD, HSPA and LTE can be configured directly on the instrument using its intuitive user interface. An integrated modulation generator generates the baseband signals internally, eliminating the need for a PC. Since users can perform on-site service themselves, downtime and cost of ownership are reduced to a minimum.

The R&S SMBV100A is the ideal instrument for users who develop digital RF modules, produce RF receivers, or investigate highly complex radar applications. Developed to provide maximum options flexibility, it can be adapted to a wide range of requirements and offers maximum functional diversity at an attractive price. For measurement tasks in research and development, the generator, which features a frequency range from 9 kHz to 6 GHz and an RF bandwidth of up to 120 MHz with internal baseband, has been designed to handle next-generation wireless communications technologies. Using an external I/Q source, the RF bandwidth can be extended to 528 MHz. All important digital radio standards are available at the press of a button.

Due to its short frequency and level setting times (<1 ms in List mode), the R&S SMBV100A enables high production throughput. The large ARB memory ensures that different test scenarios are simultaneously available. This makes it possible to directly switch between signals without time-consuming reloading. The resulting fast switchover times also contribute to speeding up production. When a power sensor of the R&S NRP family is connected, the R&S SMBV100A can determine the test setup's cable losses and frequency response. Owing to the high output level of typ. +24 dBm, losses are easily compensated without the external amplifiers that are normally needed in such tests. The long calibration interval of three years and the advantage of being able to perform service on site minimize downtimes of the test system and, as a result, service and operating costs.

The R&S SMBV100A can also be configured to address the special requirements of the aerospace and defense sector. The R&S SMBV-K6 option lets users generate complex pulse scenarios. If a broadband external I/Q source such as the R&S AFQ100B is included in the test setup, signals with an RF bandwidth of 528 MHz can be generated. Since phase-locked coupling of the RF synthesizers is possible across multiple instruments, testing of antennas with phase-coherent signals can also be performed. The design concept includes an integrated sanitizing procedure as well as an optional removable hard disk for security-relevant applications. This ensures that sensitive data always remains in the user's hands.

"The price pressure on the market is increasing. That's why our customers need an attractively priced solution that is tailored to their application," says Wolfgang Kernchen, Head of the Signal Generators, Audio Analyzers and Power Meters Subdivision. "The R&S SMBV100A shows that this combination is possible – even with internal signal generation as well as industry-leading values for output level and bandwidth. This is something new in this class."

The R&S SMBV100A vector signal generator is now available from Rohde & Schwarz.
