Alcatel-Lucent has announced that the Smart-RF research project undertaken by a consortium of companies led by Bell Labs, Alcatel-Lucent’s research arm, achieved a major breakthrough for base station deployment. The group developed the technical foundation for a new reconfigurable radio frequency transmitter capable of supporting different wireless standards within a single radio frequency band.
The Royal Academy of Engineering, Radio Design Ltd and the University of Leeds, UK, have announced the establishment of a new Research Chair focussed on original research in the field of microwave signal processing. Professor Ian Hunter of the School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering has been appointed to this position and will head up a Centre of Microwave Signal Processing at Leeds University.
Analog Devices Inc. leads the worldwide data converter market with a 48.5 percent share, according to industry analyst firm Databeans Inc., an independent market research company focused on the semiconductor and electronics industry. In a newly issued market research report entitled “2012 Analog,” Databeans confirmed that Analog Devices continues to lead the data converter market worldwide with a majority share that is larger than the combined market share of all the companies identified by the research.
TriQuint Semiconductor Inc. announced that it has been selected by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to lead a $12.3 million development program focused on ultra-fast gallium nitride (GaN) switch technology for the Microscale Power Conversion (MPC) program. TriQuint’s revolutionary new GaN modulator has the potential to enable highly-efficient RF transmitters substantially smaller than current solutions.
TriQuint Semiconductor Inc. announced that it has signed a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) to explore and fabricate new high-frequency and mixed signal integrated circuits (ICs) based on TriQuint gallium nitride (GaN) technology.
LTE smartphones will top 65 million units in 2012, led by the anticipated LTE-enabled iPhone 5 and Samsung’s LTE smartphones. “Mobile wireless royalties for GSM, WCDMA, and LTE smartphones were just under $20 billion in 2011 but the increase to 65 million LTE smartphones will help push the 2012 royalty total higher,” states research director Philip Solis.
