7Layers has been recognized by MetroPCS Communications as an approved test lab for LTE device certification. The cooperation expands the options available to mobile phone manufacturers who are preparing to introduce LTE devices.
Nujira Ltd., the world leader in envelope tracking (ET) technology, has announced that is sampling its next generation ET IC for mobile handsets, the NCT-L1200, to lead partners. The second product in its Coolteq.L ET product family, Nujira’s NCT-L1200 has already been delivered to several key platform chipset vendors, and is the only product currently available on the market that supports the maximum 20MHz channel bandwidth of LTE.
ABI Research forecasts that a total of 1.95 billion NFC-enabled devices will ship in 2017 — a combination of both handsets and CE Devices. The lion’s share of NFC enablement will continue to be focused in the handset market, although we are expecting a surge of NFC functionality included within CE devices, for simple pairing of devices, exchange of data, and online authentication functionality. In total, 395 million CE devices will ship in 2017, predominantly into media tablets, PC accessories, and gaming consoles.
In the past RF power amplifiers (RFPAs) for cell phone handsets have relied exclusively on GaAs or InGaP-based RFICs. However in recent years RF CMOS RFPA technology has made significant strides and is now strongly impacting the territory that was previously the exclusive domain of GaAs or InGaP technology. This new report from Engalco provides information concerning the players, industry dynamics and detailed, highly granular, market forecasts through to year 2017.
Apple’s iPhone 5 and Samsung’s Galaxy smartphones have provided LTE-enabled handset shipments a substantial lift in 2012 – even if it has not necessarily assisted the 4G mobile operators with “each and every” LTE handset sold.
China-based manufacturers of cellphones and tablets in 2012 more than doubled their share of purchases of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) motion sensors, reflecting the rising prominence of the companies in the global market, according to an IHS iSuppli MEMS Topical Report from information and analytics provider IHS.
Mobile device design is increasingly reliant on integrated platforms, which are chipsets based on combinations of application processor, baseband processor, and wireless connectivity technologies. In 2012, 19 percent of handsets shipped were based on an integrated platform; set to more than double to 46 percent in 2018.
In many parts of the world, smartphone shipments account for a larger percentage of mobile handset shipments than feature phones and low-cost handsets. Yet within the smartphone class of devices, segmentation is increasing to three price tiers (low, mid, and high). Shipments of sub-US$250 low-cost smartphones will grow from 259 million in 2013 to 788 million in 2018, according to recent Market Data from market intelligence firm ABI Research.
The use of Wi-Fi functionality in small-cell base stations will be a game changer for cellphone service providers, easing heavily congested data pipes while linking together billions of devices into a single network architecture, according to the IHS iSuppli Mobile & Wireless Communications Service at information and analytics provider IHS.
