Peregrine Semiconductor Corp., a fabless provider of high-performance radio frequency integrated circuits (RFICs), announced a single-pole, single throw (SPST) antenna tuning switch for LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) smartphones. This latest addition to Peregrine’s series of tuning devices leverages Peregrine’s UltraCMOS® process using the HaRP™ and DuNE™ enhancements to deliver an ideal combination of performance and integration to 4G wireless platforms.  In a related announcement today, the PE613010 antenna tuning switch has already been chosen by Pantech to drive performance in its new Vega LTE-A handset.

Yota launched the first LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) network in Russia last October; however, with the first compatible handset, SK Telecom was the earliest to make the technology commercially available in June 2013. Within two weeks, the South Korean operator has already claimed over 150,000 subscriptions, roughly 0.6% of its total.

With the first service providers, such as SK Telecom, now upgrading their networks to LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) and China Mobile deploying a TD-LTE network and issuing a huge tender for over 200,000 base stations, TD-LTE and LTE-Advanced are set to dominate the LTE installed base of macro basestations as early as 2015.

Anritsu Corp. announces its first LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) Carrier Aggregation (CA) test case submissions to RAN 5, demonstrating a strength in protocol conformance that extends across current 2G, 3G, and leading-edge LTE technology. This follows its recent world first in validating RF conformance test cases for CA in PTCRB.  RAN 5 verification paves the way for protocol test validations and the inclusion of this technology in GCF and PTCRB certification.

 Aeroflex Ltd. announced the launch of the TM500 Multi-UE LTE-A Test Mobile, which supports carrier aggregation across multiple mobile terminals or UE. Carrier aggregation, a key component of LTE-A, allows multiple carriers comprised of either contiguous or non-contiguous spectrum to be added together, allowing wider channel bandwidths -- and higher data rates -- to be achieved. 

LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) subscriptions will take an important role in the mobile subscriber market, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 295% between 2013 and 2018 to reach 500 million, which will represent 34% of the overall 1.47 billion LTE-related subscriptions. Meanwhile, total LTE subscriptions for 1Q-2013 increased by 37.5% quarter-on-quarter, reaching 108 million.

Anite, a global leader in wireless equipment testing technology, announced that it has further demonstrated its protocol test case leadership with the first LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) carrier aggregation (CA) test case verification submissions to RAN5. These submissions were based on initial verifications originally submitted by Anite to RAN5 in April of 2013. This key achievement is a stepping stone toward validation, leading to the inclusion of these test cases in both GCF and PTCRB device certification requirements.

Aeroflex Ltd. announced that the industry-standard TM500 LTE-A Single UE Test Mobile has added support for 3GPP Release 10 (Rel-10) Transmission Mode 9 (TM9), which allows enhanced network capability and performance by flexible use of MIMO with minimum additional overhead.
