EuMW 2010 Conferences at a Glance

The European Microwave Week now in its 13th year focuses on microwave devices, systems for telecommunications (both terrestrial and space borne), transportation, medical, radar and other new applications with a week full of workshops and short courses. The event taking place at the CNIT center in Paris from September 26th through October 1st consists of four conferences and the continents largest exhibition dedicated to RF/microwave vendors. The conferences include the European Microwave Conference (EuMC), European Wireless Technology Conference (EuWiT), European Radar Conference (EuRAD) and European Microwave Integrated Circuits Conference (EuMIC).

The EuMC looks at current and future trends covering high-frequency related topics, from materials and technologies to integrated circuits, systems and applications. Areas to be discussed include the latest development for passive components, modeling and design of high frequency and high data-rate photonics, highly stable and noiseless microwave and millimeter-wave sources, new linearization and power generation techniques and the impact of new packaging technologies on development applications. Special emphasis will be placed on emerging technologies such as MEMS, meta-materials, reconfigurable RF components and systems, communication receivers and transmitters. The scope also includes electromagnetic field theory, numerical techniques, theoretical and experimental developments in wave propagation, remote sensing, antenna systems and advanced simulation techniques. The conference forum will include more than 300 selected papers in about 60 oral and poster sessions, covering applications such as instrumentation, medical, telecommunication, radar, space, automotive and defense systems.

By incorporating sensors, wireless communication and positioning devices, functionality such as environment monitoring, machine-to-machine communications and body area networks are being incorporated into everyday objects. The development of this functionality is the subject of intensive research. The EuWiT looks at new developments in wireless technologies for communication, broadcasting, sensing, positioning and navigation applications. This unique, interdisciplinary conference covers the ongoing research and innovations behind emerging wireless systems and underlying research such as MIMO and OFDM techniques and the new challenges for transmitter architectures (such as improving efficiency and linearity) for new mobile technology such as LTE. Conference topics include applications and standards, systems and signal processing, antenna and propagation, key architectures and sub-systems for base stations and mobile terminals. Presentations and discussions will focus on autonomous communicant sensors, wireless cooperative systems, electromagnetic modeling of complex environments are presented along with a look at the challenges to cognitive radio, millimeter wave mobile communications with low power consumption, modeling of non stationary channels for vehicular communications, for example.

EuRAD is the major European forum dedicated to radar technology, system design, and applications. This conference covers four specific topics. In the Radar Sub-systems area, the conference focuses on antenna design, modeling and measurements, active phased arrays and reconfigurable radar front-ends. The Radar Wave scattering and signal processing topic comprises digital beam-forming, data processing for target tracking, localization, for high resolution and imaging. The area of radar wave scattering and signal processing also considers waveform diversity, clutter and propagation effects, measurement and system performance modeling. Radar architecture and systems addresses as well over-the-horizon, imaging and CW radars as emerging technologies like ultra wide band, multi-sensors, multifunctional systems, networks and MIMO radars. Typical applications include remote sensing surveillance radar, defense and security, environmental remote sensing (including weather radar and SAR systems) and medical imaging.

The EuMIC conference looks at the microwave Monolithic Integrated circuits, MMIC and RFIC, which are the foundation of today's telecommunication and sensor systems. Along with the GaAs and silicon based IC-technologies which are used in today's microwave link, radar, and remote sensing applications, emerging technologies such as wide band gap (SiC, GaN etc), InP/antimonide and CNTs, Graphene based devices are expected to become commercially available within a few years, with an expected large impact on system performance. The downscaling of silicon technologies such as CMOS and SiGe-HBT has now resulted in device performance close to the III-V technologies with cut-off frequencies exceeding 400 GHz. As predicted, highly integrated microwave and millimetre-wave systems will likely be available also for broader consumer mass market applications due to the reduced cost and increased functionality. As a result of the downscaling, there are however many challenges to conquer. EuMIC is the leading conference for MMICs/RFICs and their applications in Europe, and therefore acts as the ideal event to keep up to date with the latest achievements in the field, including topics on recent breakthroughs and advances on HF electronic and optoelectronic. The aim of the conference is to promote the discussion of recent developments and trends, and encourage the exchange of scientific and technical information on physical fundamentals, material technology, process development and technology, physics based and empirical behavioral modeling of microwave and optoelectronic active devices, design of monolithic ICs based on GaAs, InP, SiGe, GaN, SiC, RF CMOS and other semiconductor materials. Special emphasis will be given to applications covering the field of telecommunications (RF, microwave and optical), automotive, sensors, MEMS, defense and space, as well as emerging technologies such as wide band-gap semiconductors.
