Hittite Microwave Corp., a supplier of complete MMIC-based solutions for communication and military markets, has launched its first D-Type Flip-Flop that supports 28 Gbps data transmission and clock rates up to 28 GHz. The HMC853LC3C is ideal for a wide range of applications, and supports many of the new and emerging optical, networking and storage area network (SAN) standards, including: 40/100 GbE, 40G (D)QPSK, 100G DP-QPSK, 14G Fiber Channel and Infiniband EDR.
The HMC853LC3C is a D-Type Flip-Flop that supports single-ended or differential operation data transmission rates up to 28 Gbps. The device operates with clock signals up to 28 GHz, and the input is broadband from DC to 28 GHz. During normal operation, data is transferred to the outputs on the positive edge of the clock; reversing the clock inputs accommodates negative-edge triggered applications.
The HMC853LC3C also features an output level control pin, which allows for signal loss compensation or optimization, allowing the differential output voltage swing to be adjusted from 700 mVp-p to 1300 mVp-p. Differential input signals to the HMC853LC3C are terminated with 50 Ohms to ground on-chip, and may be either AC or DC coupled. The differential outputs may also be either AC or DC coupled and can be connected directly to a 50 Ohm to ground terminated system; DC blocking capacitors may be used if the terminating system is 50 Ohms to a non-ground DC voltage.
Propagation delay from clock-to-data output is typically 101 ps, while rise and fall times are 15 ps and 14 ps, respectively. Also ideal for high performance, broadband test applications, the HMC853LC3C exhibits only 2 ps p-p of deterministic jitter, and less than 0.2 ps of additive random jitter.
The HMC853LC3C is specified for operation from -40° to +85°C and operates from a -3.3 V DC supply, while consuming only 240 mW. Housed in a ceramic, RoHS compliant, 3 x 3 mm SMT package, the HMC853LC3C provides pin-compatibility with the previously released 13 Gbps/13 GHz D-Type Flip-Flops, the HMC723LC3C, and the HMC673LC3C.
