The International Microwave Symposium (IEEE MTT-S) this year will be held at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, Boston, MA, from June 7-12, 2009. Since its practical realization in 1959, the Ferrite Junction Circulator has found numerous applications in microwave systems. This presentation provides easy-to-understand concepts for non-technical individuals, as well as technical details useful for design and component engineers.
The circuit functions of circulators and isolators are described using simple concepts and drawings. Various construction methods are outlined for the different application environments of waveguide, coax and micro strip. Following a brief description of operational principles, examples are given of how ferrite devices are used.
Ferrite devices possess certain electrical properties that must be specified in order to incorporate them correctly in any microwave circuit. A description of these parameters with preferred values is provided as a guide for component selection.
Design considerations are presented for the application engineer who may have unique requirements such as high power, low inter-modulation distortion (IMD), dual junction and wide temperature range.
