NDK (Nihon Dempa Kogyo Co. Ltd.) announces the availability of the NV2520SA series, an SMD voltage-controlled crystal oscillator (VCXO) in a ceramic package measuring just 2.5 x 2.0 mm with a height of only 0.9 mm maximum. It was developed to meet the growing demand for clock signals and timing for complex image processing in mobile devices. This series is particularly useful for the one-segment broadcasting that is compatible with the spread of digital terrestrial TV broadcasting. These applications require many functions making them very size restricted for components thus the reduction in size of the NV2520, which requires just 30 percent board space of its 5.0 x 3.2 mm predecessor and just 20 percent of the cubic volume. Their standard frequency is 27 MHz with other frequencies available. Despite their super-small size they deliver a frequency pullability of ±100 ppm and operate in a temperature range of -40° to +85°C.

The NV2520 operates on a supply voltage of 3.3 VCC while consuming just 10 mA maximum providing a C-MOS output level. They are in a lead-free packaging which meets the requirements for re-flow profiling using lead-free solder and is RoHS compliant.

Applications include digital mobile TV handsets, mobile phones with TV, as well as various in-vehicle appliances.

“With so many options being packaged into mobile handsets space is at a premium. Taking less than 1/3rd of the space of a 5.0 x 3.2 package this VCXO provides designers the required timing source for digital terrestrial TV receivers without compromising performance,” said Mike Walczak, President, NDK America Inc.
