Parker Hannifin Corp., a leader in motion and control technologies, announced the introduction of a new multi-planar EMI shielding gasket in convenient strip form by its Chomerics Division. SOFT-SHIELD® 4850 is ideal for use as a shielding solution in consumer and commercial electronics, telecom and information technology applications such as backplanes, I/O panels, and access panel cabinet seals.

According to product manager Chris Koza, “This proprietary material uses electrically conductive silver-plated fibers optimally dispersed within a low-density foam to give a low closure force, cost-effective shielding solution with excellent through-resistance and compression set properties, even after multiple closure cycles.”

SOFT-SHIELD strip gaskets provide EMI shielding in the range of 70 to 80 dB, at up to 20 percent lower cost than fabric-over-foam gaskets. The gaskets exhibit high Z-axis conductivity with extremely short ground paths. Since the integrity of the base foam is uncompromised, strip gaskets offer exceptional physical and mechanical properties, including very low closure force for stable electrical performance, excellent through-resistance and compression set properties. It is certified compliant with UL 94 V-0 flammability standard, is fully RoHS compliant and has an operating temperature range of -40° to +70°C.

The convenient, ready to use, pre-cut strips are available in a range of standard widths in two-foot (610 mm) lengths. Custom sizes are available on request. In order to simplify assembly, provide gasket adhesion and optimize electrical interface resistance, SOFT-SHIELD 4850 can be specified with a selectively coated pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) to optimize adhesion and electrical interface resistance for high performance.
