Fig. 1 The amplifier's typical intermodulation performance.

Third Generation (3G) wireless is the next phase in wireless communications, defined by the migration to packet-switched networks at high speed data rates. 3G capability will be a highly efficient means for transmitting both voice and data. The Cougar 2100 MHz (3G) SCPA amplifier is the newest addition to the company's Ultratech line of linear power amplifiers. Built for use in 3G network infrastructures, the Cougar amplifier operates from 2110 to 2170 MHz and delivers 10 W of output power with 45 dB of gain. With high efficiency, a low adjacent channel power rejection (ACPR) of 53 dBc and a calculated mean time between failure (MTBF) of 200,000 hours, the Cougar SCPA is a cost-effective and reliable 3G power amplifier.

Other performance specifications include a gain flatness of ±1 dB over the operating frequency range and a typical gain variation of ±0.75 dB over its -10° to +70°C operating temperature range. Input and output SWR is 1.5 max and the output power at 1 dB compression (P1dB) is 46 dBm. The amplifier's typical intermodulation performance is demonstrated in the spectrum plot shown in Figure 1 . DC input voltage is 27 V with a current dissipation at rated power of 4.7 A.

A block diagram of the amplifier is shown in Figure 2 . The unit includes over current protection, thermal shutdown and automatic restart, and reverse polarity protection.

Figure 3 shows the Cougar amplifier's mechanical outline. The 20.3 x 12.8 x 2.9 cm Cougar SCPA package is 741 cm3 and weighs 1092 grams. Input and output connectors are SMA-F.

Each Cougar SCPA utilizes advanced proprietary signal correction techniques for increased linearization and efficiency to meet the growing demands for higher bandwidth and signal integrity. The amplifiers are scalable in both power and frequency, and incorporate the company's Advanced Dynamic Modeling (ADM) method to meet each user's specific requirements.
