Remcom has expanded the communication channel outputs in the latest release of Wireless InSite®, its site-specific radio propagation software for the analysis of wireless systems. The update enhances Wireless InSite’s Communication Systems Analyzer with important Wi-Fi and LTE metrics for in situ assessment of devices such as "smart home" appliances and intelligent personal assistant devices, wireless access points (i.e., routers) and LTE base stations.

The Communication System Analyzer calculates bit error rate (BER) and throughput by post-processing Wireless InSite’s signal coverage predictions, giving users tools to visualize and optimize device performance. This release offers throughput options for WiMAX, LTE and 802.11n/ac Wi-Fi protocols. A multi-stream parameter provides an estimate of potential multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) performance. The release also includes user-defined throughput tables, providing users with a mechanism for defining custom mappings between the signal quality and the modulation coding and resultant throughput.

Other improvements to the Communication System Analyzer include the addition of Shannon capacity, a calculation of the upper bound on the data rate of a communications channel, and extension of BER calculations to support modulation coding up to 1024-QAM. New metrics include signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR), received signal strength indicator (RSSI), reference signal received power (RSRP) and reference signal received quality (RSRQ).

In addition to the Communication System Analyzer updates, the new release further expands the material options supported by Wireless InSite’s X3D model, supporting user-defined materials and allowing an unlimited number of materials to be defined within a scene.
