As General Chair, I invite you to participate in the 2014 IEEE MTT-S WAMICON, Wireless and Microwave Conference, to be held in Tampa, Florida on Thursday 5th and Friday 6th June 2014. WAMICON 2014 is the 15th consecutive Wireless and Microwave Conference to be held in Florida. WAMICON started life as an outcome of industry/academic exchange between the University of South Florida (USF) Electrical Engineering Department’s Center for Wireless and Microwave Information Systems (WAMI Center) and a number of both local and national companies involved in microwave and wireless engineering. The first “conference” was held in February 1999 at the Embassy Suites adjacent to the USF campus. That conference with its small 50 or so attendees has blossomed over the years into an IEEE MTT-S sponsored annual international conference in various locations in Florida with generous support from academia and industry. In 2013, with close to 200 attendees, WAMICON, held in Orlando as an extended weekend event, had Sunday workshops, tutorials on Monday and Tuesday as well as 60 papers, a student poster competition and a separate industry poster interactive session. WAMICON has also grown from the viewpoint of having a range of commercial sponsors, a great mix of industry, governmental and academic attendees and authors as well as an expanding exhibitor presence. One of the aspects that adds to the charm of the event is the strong involvement of student and early career engineers as organizers and participants and one of the highlights has always been a lively, well-attended evening (student presenter dominated) poster session reception to close the first day of the typically two and a half day event.
The theme for WAMICON 2014 is “Emerging RF and Microwave Technologies” where authors have been especially encouraged to submit papers on biomedical applications, wireless sensing, energy harvesting, wireless power transfer, terahertz technologies, nanodevices and circuits.

A total of eight invited papers from universities and industry together with 30 other presentations will be given in two parallel sessions during Friday, June 6th. Consistent with WAMICON tradition, there will also be an interactive Student Poster Session held in conjunction with a joint WAMICON/ARFTG welcoming reception early Thursday evening on the 5th June. A separate interactive forum will be held in the afternoon of the 6th June for other university and industry poster contributors with a record number of submissions.
As has also become a tradition for many years at WAMICON, three author awards will be presented (consisting of trophies and gifts) for the best student poster, best student paper and best overall oral presentation. One other award presented is the Rudolf E. Henning Distinguished Mentoring award, given each year since 2009 to a person exemplifying selfless dedication to encouraging students and/or mentoring young engineers to advance their careers in the areas of RF/Microwave and/or Wireless Engineering.
