IEEE 802.11 wireless local area networks (LAN) are becoming ubiquitous and increasingly relied upon. The demand for wireless access to a LAN is fueled by the growth of mobile computing devices such as laptops, personal digital assistants and pocket PCs, and the desire of mobile professionals for continual connections to the network without having to “plug in.” However, there is much confusion in the 802.11 wireless industry today. Vendors and end-users are faced with the difficult task of deciding which version of 802.11 to adopt. The emergence of combined solutions such as the a/g and a/b combinations of the 802.11 standards has further clouded the decision making process.

This book is designed for networking professionals and IT executives who are interested in developing tactics and strategies that take advantage of the exciting Wi-Fi wireless LAN market. The technology and business implications are presented in an easy to understand manner. Specifically, it covers important wireless LAN design and deployment issues, as well as market dynamics, market segmentation, service provider, enterprise and chipset strategies. The value of this book resides in its analysis of the current wireless LAN market as well as future threats to and opportunities for the stakeholders of this industry. Both the technical and market insights will enable the reader to look ahead and be positioned to profit from this competitive industry.

The book begins with an overview of the technology and the market segments, followed by an examination of the key drivers behind the success of the 802.11b technology. Emerging Wi-Fi standards like the 802.11g and its impact on all market segments are then covered. Case studies involving enterprise, home and public access wireless LAN deployment as well as the implications of standards development is also analyzed extensively. Finally, the inter-relationship of the 802.11a, b and g standards is presented.

Design of Linear RF Outphasing Power Amplifiers

Artech House Inc.
213 pages; $89, £62
ISBN: 1-58053-374-4

Modern wireless communications demand exacting standards of linearity and direct current (DC) efficiency for their power amplifiers. The challenge has been met through a variety of creative approaches over the years and the linearization and efficiency enhancement of microwave amplifiers remains an area of active research. Generally speaking, linearization techniques can be classified under the categories of either feedback or feedforward approaches. A third technique for amplifier linearization, dating back to the 1930s, is known as the outphasing approach and uses power combining techniques to create a linear output waveform from two nonlinear input sources. When combined properly, the resulting waveform is highly linear, but the input amplifiers that create the nonlinear input waveforms can be designed to be very efficient from a DC power perspective. This book aims to provide the reader with the most up-to-date summary of recent advances in outphasing microwave power amplifier design and to present the historical background that led to its development.

It is organized as follows: Chapter 1 begins with a brief introduction of wireless communications standards and their imposed requirements on power amplifiers. It also introduces the concept of the outphasing power amplifier and discusses its historical advantages and limitations. Chapter 2 discusses outphasing amplifier system linearity performance, first introducing the typical modulations and baseband filtering techniques, then describing various schemes for implementing the signal component separation function. Chapter 3 reviews several correction approaches to compensate the imbalance between the two amplifier paths and improve the linearity performance of the system. These include schemes based on training vectors and those that can operate in background. Chapter 4 concludes the book by addressing the efficiency-linearity trade-off in the power combiners of the two amplifiers.
