Munich, July 1, 2008 — Rohde & Schwarz has expanded the capabilities of its R&S SMF100A microwave signal generator with two new options. The R&S SMF-K27 option allows users to configure pulse trains for radar specific developments and tests. The R&S SMF-K28 option makes the R&S SMF100A the first signal generator worldwide to handle power analysis.

Pulse trains consist of pulses with different durations. Their pulse width and pulse pause can be user-configured. Such signals are frequently used in radar systems to improve performance. Interfering with such pulses is far more difficult than with single-pulse signaling. These pulses also enable radar receivers to detect incorrect measurements more easily and prevent receivers from being "blind". The R&S SMF-K27 option allows users to generate pulse trains with very short rise and fall times. It makes use of the full dynamic range and speed of the pulse generator and modulator that can be integrated as options into the R&S SMF100A. This pulse train generation concept is unique.

Microwave signal generators are standard tools for developers of amplifiers and other components. When developers want to measure the signal power on DUTs, however, they may have to rely on a power meter or spectrum analyzer, for example. The R&S SMF-K28 option offers the unique alternative of performing power analyses such as compression point measurements using an R&S SMF100A microwave signal generator. The results can be read, stored and also displayed as a diagram. In addition, the power versus frequency value can be measured to test the frequency response of a filter, for example.

The R&S SMF100A microwave signal generator outputs the measured frequency response on its display. Furthermore, it offers insertable markers for indicating which power is determined at a specific frequency. To take advantage of these functions, a power sensor of the R&S NRP-Z family simply needs to be connected to the microwave signal generator. An external PC is not necessary.

The R&S SMF-K27 option for pulse trains and the R&S SMF-K28 option for power analysis are now available from Rohde & Schwarz. To benefit from the pulse train option, the R&S SMF100A must be equipped with the R&S SMF-K3 (pulse modulator) and the R&S SMF K23 (pulse generator) options.
