Columbia, MD September 6, 2007 Rohde & Schwarz announced solutions for its R&S SMU200A RF signal generator and R&S?AMU200A baseband signal generator that allow them to become single-instrument solutions for evaluating 2x2 Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) receivers employed in wireless networks such as 3GPP Release 7, 3GPP LTE, WLAN 802.11n, and WiMAX 802.16. MIMO employs two or more receive and transmit antennas, which can reliably increase data rates in complex signal conditions. As a result, it is being widely deployed in wireless systems. However, MIMO can create an environment in which crosstalk between antennas impairs transmission quality. Consequently, these multipath signal conditions must be considered when performing channel simulation. A typical MIMO system (called 2x2 MIMO) has two receiving and two transmitting antennas, so a measurement set-up normally requires two signal generators and four fading channel simulators. The R&S?SMU-K74 option for the R&S?SMU200A RF signal generator lets users perform measurements on 2x2 MIMO receivers with only one instrument. Generators equipped with the optional internal fading simulators as well as two RF sources and two baseband sources may easily be upgraded with the R&S?SMU-K74 option to simulate all four fading channels required in 2x2 MIMO systems. For users who require only baseband signals, the R&S AMU200A baseband generator may also be equipped with internal fading simulators (options R&S AMU-B14 and R&S AMU-B15). The instrument's dual-path concept allows two baseband sources to be integrated as well, and the R&S AMU-K74 option provides the same functions at baseband as the R&S SMU-K74 option provides for the R&S SMU200A, again resulting in a single-instrument solution. In both cases, the user can save space and cost, since there is no cabling, synchronization, and level adjustment required.
