BARCELONA, Spain--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 13, 2007--RF Micro Devices, Inc. (NASDAQ: RFMD), a global leader in the design and manufacture of high-performance radio systems and solutions for applications that drive mobile communications, today announced that it has demonstrated full compliance with the DigRF3G v3.09 specification and has adopted the DigRF3G radio interface for its upcoming HSDPA/HSUPA/EDGE cellular transceiver solution. DigRF3G is an industry standard digital interface between the cellular transceiver and baseband that improves time-to-market, lowers cost, reduces size and eases system integration in next-generation 3G multimode, multi-band handsets. The DigRF3G standard is jointly supported by a consortium of leading companies representing the semiconductor, cellular handset and test equipment industries. RFMD is a leader in the development of digital radio interfaces and has offered digital interfaces in its highly-integrated transceiver products since the introduction of POLARIS(TM) 1 in 2002. RFMD was among the founding members of the DigRF working group and is proud to play a leading role in the development of the DigRF3G specification. In 3G multimode handsets, the implementation of the DigRF3G standard provides handset manufacturers a standardized radio interface, including diversity options, that paves the way for the adoption of 3G multimode standards across all tiers of mobile handsets. Accordingly, DigRF3G is anticipated to be a primary driver of 3G usage and proliferation. Kris Rausch, general manager of RFMD's System Business Unit, said, "RFMD has demonstrated full DigRF compliance and is currently verifying DigRF3G-compliant silicon with baseband reference partners. This evaluation and verification process is an important step in the implementation of DigRF3G in future reference designs for tier-one handset manufacturers and in the development of our next-generation HSPA transceiver solution, which incorporates HSDPA, HSUPA and EDGE functionality onto a single silicon die." RFMD's HSPA transceiver is designed to greatly simplify the programming model and integration efforts. Complex tasks that traditionally required critical coordination between the radio and baseband manufacturers are implemented entirely in RFMD's transceiver solution. This advanced implementation eliminates tasks previously accomplished at the baseband and handset integration level, enabling phone makers to greatly reduce their development costs and efforts while easing implementation and accelerating time-to-market.
