Murata Manufacturing Co. Ltd. announced that it has acquired privately held US-based venture company SyChip Inc., a provider of radio frequency chip scale modules (CSM). Murata Manufacturing Co. Ltd. is a passive components supplier.

Murata agreed to pay approximately $140 M as the total consideration for outstanding shares, stock options and warrants. The acquisition is expected to be completed by the end of April.

“This is a good acquisition for us because it gives us the speed and entrepreneur spirit of a US venture backed company with unique VoIP, IPD and software capability,” said Yasutaka Murata, president and chief executive officer of Murata. “The acquisition will allow us to serve a broader set of customers desiring to use highly integrated wireless modules with GPS, WiFi, WiMAX and mobile TV functionalities.”

SyChip has design and customer support centers in the US and China. All current SyChip employees are expected to join Murata.

“The SyChip team is excited at the prospects of working hand in hand with Murata on leading edge wireless module connectivity,” said George Barber, president and CEO of SyChip. “We will now be able to tap into the vast resources of a leader like Murata, especially their worldwide sales force.”
