High-precision metal part and finishing specialist, Tecan, has been recognized for its ongoing commitment to minimizing its effect on the environment, by being granted ISO 14001 status for its in-house environmental management systems. This ISO specifies the actual requirements for an environmental management system and applies to those environmental aspects that the organization has control of and over which it can be expected to have an influence.

It is not only widely perceived as the corner stone standard of the ISO 14000 series but is the only ISO 14000 standard against which it is currently possible to be certified by an external certification authority. In Tecan's case this is the prestigious British Standards Institute (BSI).

"To achieve the accreditation it is necessary to prove that you have established and are committed to maintaining a number of management procedures and initiatives to ensure ongoing conformance with the International ISO 14001 guidelines," said Peter Windell, quality and environment manager, Tecan. "Beyond our established environmental initiatives, this new level of recognition encompasses our close monitoring and management of everything the company consumes — from process chemicals to raw materials, electricity, water, gas, packaging and commodities of all kinds — in every case with a view to the absolute minimization of usage/wastage and the optimization of disposal. ISO 14001 specifies a framework of control for an environmental management system against which an organization can be certified and regularly reviewed by a third party. The company also has to ensure compliance with all relevant environmental laws and regulations. We are, of course, very proud of this achievement."
